Division and difference don’t seem to sit well with the Prince of Peace, but this is the clearest statement from Our Lord Himself about division arising as a result of what he does and who he is. Perhaps using that title, Prince of Peace, is a way into understanding all this. It comes from the prophecy of Isaiah, chapter 9: ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called (amongst other things) […] Prince of Peace.’ If you can hear that in the fugue from Handel’s Messiah, that’s a helpful indication that we need to go back several months, to seek our answers in the Christmas cycle of feasts and readings. READ MORE
